Just because it’s snowy and wintry outside, it doesn’t mean you need to be stuck inside! Canada’s capital is full of opportunities to get out, have fun, and enjoy the great outdoors. Today, let’s go over some things you can do to make the most of the colder months, both in your yard at home and elsewhere in the city.
Sledding
Does your property sit on an inclined slope that’s safe for sledding? Bring the kids outside and take to the snow! Sledding is not only a great way to stay active, but also to make some memories with family members and even neighbours. If a fresh blanket of the white stuff has fallen, head out and go for a ride!
Snow Forts, Snowball Fights and Snowmen
Embrace your inner architect and build a snow fort! It can be a lot of fun if you get the kids involved, and there’s always the chance of a crazy snowball fight starting up. Otherwise, you can always get to rolling on your own or with friends and build a snowman. After all, January received record-breaking amounts of snowfall, so you might as well put it to good use!
Winterlude 2019
If you’re looking for something to do this winter outdoors and off your home lot, you won’t want to miss out on Winterlude 2019! A celebration of snow and ice lasting for days, Ottawa’s most popular winter event is always full of things to see and do. Rent a pair of skates and glide along the frozen Rideau Canal, check out the beautiful ice sculptures on display, grab a Beavertail (or three), take in the Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival, and more.
Skiing
Maybe you’re the sporty type who loves to make the most of the amount of snow we get (and it’s a lot). If so, why not strap on a pair of skis and take to the slopes? Skiing is a fun and exhilarating way to stay in shape during a time of the year when most of us tend to slow down and get a little lazy. And if zipping down snowy hills isn’t your thing, don’t forget that there’s always cross-country skiing for a more leisurely way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.
Winter is what you make of it, so make the most of the season by getting out there and enjoying what it has to offer! Take your family out for some backyard games and snowman-building or explore Ottawa’s offerings to see what’s available.
