When you’re craving some winter fun, there’s no better place to be than Ottawa. From snowshoeing to cross country skiing to skating along the largest natural skateway in the world – there’s something here for everyone. If you’re looking for the best outdoor skating rinks in Ottawa to enjoy this year, we’ve gathered them all right here.
The Rideau Canal
Beginning in January, you can skate across the world-famous Rideau Canal, which stretches over 7 kilometres, right through the heart of the city. This naturally frozen rink is completely free and open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, so you can enjoy it any time you please. Just be sure to check the ice conditions before going, and bundle up well as it will feel colder when you’re out on this open rink.
Rink of Dreams
Close to the Canal is the Rink of Dreams which is refrigerated and also free to use. So when the canal isn’t suitable for skating, head here instead! It’s located in front of City Hall, and there’s usually music and a light display which adds to the fun atmosphere.
Lansdowne Skating Court
Located south of the downtown core next to the Aberdeen Pavilion is the Lansdowne skating court which is also refrigerated and offers a stunning backdrop for skating. It’s the perfect spot when you want to skate for a bit and then enjoy some shopping or grab food. It’s also free and is usually open from 6a.m to 11 pm.
Rideau Hall
Located at the Governor-General of Canada’s residence, this historic rink has been around since the late 1800s. It’s another beautiful spot to visit for some outdoor fun that’s free to the public. Double-check before you head here as reservations might be required due to COVID.
Brewery Creek Skating Rink
Though it’s technically in Quebec, this rink is worth the trip as it winds through downtown Gatineau. Many refer to it as a smaller version of the Rideau. So if you’re looking for another natural skateway to try, this is it.
Forest Skating Trails
Skating trails in the forest are more popular than ever now. And once you try them out, you’ll see why. There are a few areas where you can glide along the tree-lined trails. The three ones to try out in the area are the Icelynd Skating Trails in Stittsville, RiverOak Estates 30 minutes from downtown Ottawa, and the Countryside Adventure in Moose Creek, which is about 45 minutes from the city.
